Ironclad
I was thinking about a song for my next song of the week, because I'm a dork and think about that when I listen to music during the week, and this one song so impressed me today, and since it's available for free download from the band, I figured I'd just pass it on to you, like I was some kind of mp3 blogger.
Bishop Allen - "The Monitor"
It is a humble song. Simple melody, bass, drums, light guitar. Kinda shaky singing. But man are these some good lyrics. He compares and contrasts his life to the lives of the soldiers on board the ironclad ship The Monitor. Which is strange and specific enough to get my attention. But man! The ringing in his ears (from being in a rock band) is nothing like the ringing in their ears, and by the time he gets to the "we're singing la da da..." chorus, you realize the chorus is meaningless fluff compared to enduring an entire night of shells pounding against the walls. Man! What a good idea for a song! It seems very literary to me. And I love sideways critiques of modern life. Ironclads and rock bands! Similar? Not at all! Here's why.

perhaps...history fuzzy...like an old teddy bear...dripping with blood...of innocent little teddy bears...eating other teddy bears...aboard the CSS Virginia...floating on an ocean in the sun...and the bears all burts into flame...melting polyeurethane...turns into little bubbles...like ellipses...that lead to more ellipses...ah, history.
i bet it's the "and none of them knew, or none of them cared, how much had just changed, right then and right there." that's worth listening to several times, at least.
